Pascal Ackermann (BORA - Hansgrohe) recorded his second win at the Giro d’Italia as he beat Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) to the line in the rain in Terracina.
Arnaud Demare (Groupama-FDJ), Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) and Matteo Moschetti (Trek-Segafredo) completed the top five.
The riders battled in wet conditions, with the torrential rain pouring down on them throughout the 140km stage from Frascati. The GC times were taken 9km from the end as the riders crossed the finish line for the first time before a circuit on the drenched roads of Terracina.
The GC classification remained unchanged with Primož Roglič (Team Jumbo-Visma) retaining the Maglia Rosa and a 35-second lead over Simon Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT), with Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) four seconds further back in third.
2017 Giro winner Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) was forced to abandon in the opening kilometres after his heavy crash on Stage 4, with his injuries meaning he can not continue.
