Movistar Team’s Richard Carapaz stormed to victory with a late surge on Stage 4 of the Giro d’Italia. Caleb Ewan (Lotto Soudal) finished just behind the Ecuadorian, with Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) in third.
Two crashes in the peloton caused chaos in the final phase of the stage. A decisive move by Carapaz over the final 400m saw him produce 637W for 45 seconds and it was too much for his rivals to handle.
Primož Roglič (Team Jumbo-Visma) remains in the Maglia Rosa now leading by 35 seconds over Simon Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT), with Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) four seconds further back in third in the GC. 2017 Giro winner Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) suffered a late crash and dropped down the GC to 56th now trailing Roglič by 4’30”.
