Tadej Pogacar sprinted to victory on a compelling ninth stage of the Tour de France, with fellow Slovenian Primoz Roglic following in second to take the overall lead.
Marc Hirschi (Team Sunweb) produced one of the most impressive solo rides of recent years at the Tour when he launched a solo breakaway and held off an elite quartet of GC riders until 1.7km go.
The Swiss stuck with the group and led out the sprint to the finish in Laruns, but he was pipped to the line by Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) and Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma).
With previous leader Adam Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) being dropped earlier in the day, Roglic took the overall lead by 21 seconds from Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers), who was fourth on the stage.
