Pascal Ackermann produced a sensational sprint to take the spoils on the opening stage of Tirreno-Adriatico.
The BORA-hansgrohe rider had to come from a long way back as the action reached a blistering conclusion, and moved his way into contention by bravely hugging the crash barriers before pipping Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates) at the line.
Ackermann sealed his victory by the slightest of margins with Gaviria holding on for second place ahead of Magnus Cort Nielsen (EF Education First Pro Cycling).
That result meant Ackermann also took control of the leader’s jersey, and after the stage he said: “I’m really happy with that sprint and it felt amazing, especially given the position I came from. The gap wasn’t that wide but it was just enough for me and I’m happy I could finish it off. I haven’t had much luck over the last few weeks but my team-mates really put their trust in me and I want to thank them.”
