AG2R La Mondiale’s Nans Peter won Stage 8 of the Tour de France out of the day’s breakaway, as Adam Yates clung on to the overall lead in the Pyrenees.
Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) was dropped twice on the last of the day’s three climbs, the Col de Peyresourde, but rallied each time to finish alongside all of his GC rivals except Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates).
Pogacar launched repeated attacks out of the yellow jersey group on the Peyresourde and finally broke clear at the third attempt, eventually crossing the line 40 seconds ahead of the overall contenders.
The day claimed several big-name victims, with Tom Dumoulin (Team Jumbo-Visma) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) among those who lost significant chunks of time after being distanced on the Peyresourde.
Peters claimed victory ahead of Toms Skujins (Trek-Segafredo) in second and Carlos Verona (Movistar Team) in third.
