Tadej Pogacar will win the 2020 Tour de France in Paris on Sunday after producing one of the race’s all-time great time-trial performances on Stage 20.
The 21-year-old UAE Team Emirates rider went into the 36.2km stage a distant 57 seconds behind long-time leader Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) but stopped the clock 1min 56sec faster than his Slovenian compatriot, which handed him overall victory by 59 seconds.
Pogacar’s sensational performance also earned him his third stage win of the race. Tom Dumoulin (Team Jumbo-Visma) was second and Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) third, both 1min 21sec adrift.
Porte’s impressive ride lifted him up to third place in the general classification, 3min 30sec down on Pogacar. Roglic finished fifth on the stage.
Pogacar’s memorable day got even better when it emerged he had also sealed victory in the mountains classification, having ascended La Planche des Belles Filles – the category-one mountain on which the time trial ended – faster than polka dot rival Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers).
Pogacar now has to avoid incident or accident on Stage 21’s largely processional stage into Paris to become Slovenia’s first winner of the Tour de France.
