Soren Kragh Andersen escaped to victory yet again on Stage 19 of the Tour de France to wrap up his second win of the race, and Team Sunweb’s third.
The Danish rider worked his way into an elite group in the final hour of action and then attacked solo with 15km to go.
Just like he did on Stage 14, the 26 year old pressed home his advantage in consummate style, eventually taking his win with a 53-second cushion.
It was Luka Mezgec (Mitchelton-SCOTT) who took the sprint for second place ahead of Jasper Stuyven (Trek-Segafredo), with the peloton rolling home 6 minutes 48 seconds behind that duo.
There was no change at the top of the General Classification so that means yellow jersey holder Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) will take a 57-second lead over Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) into Saturday’s time trial.
There were also no changes at the top of the other classifications, with Pogacar retaining the white jersey, Sam Bennett (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) holding onto the green one, and Richard Carapaz (INEOS Grenadiers) still in polka dot.
After the stage the triumphant Andersen said: “To win two times, I’m speechless and could never have dreamed of anything better.
“I was in that group with some of the best riders in the world and wondering ‘how do I beat them?’, and the moment came after Matteo Trentin (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) had attacked.
“I was on the limit but hoped that if I got a small gap they would start looking at each other, and that’s exactly what happened. I’ll remember this Tour for the rest of my life and I’m super happy.”
