Tour de France 2020: Pogacar seals yellow as Bennett reigns supreme

Tadej Pogacar became the youngest Tour de France winner in 116 years after Sam Bennett had sprinted to victory on the final stage in Paris.

Pogacar crossed the line safely in the midst of the peloton as he completed a fairy-tale triumph at just 21 years of age.

The UAE Team Emirates rider wrapped up his victory by a 59-second margin, rounding off an incredible performance which also saw him claim two stage successes along the way, and take the King of the Mountains and Young Rider jerseys.

As expected following the previous day’s time trial, Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) took second place on the podium with Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) 2 minutes 29 seconds behind him in third.

The action had reached a gripping conclusion with the traditional bunch sprint following the procession into the French capital.

It was Bennett who took the stage win, flying down the Champs-Élysées to pip world champion Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) and Peter Sagan (BORA-hansgrohe) at the line.

That was the Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider’s second stage triumph of the race and ensured he became the first Irishman since Sean Kelly in 1989 to win the green jersey.
