Tour de France 2019: Yellow Jersey joy for Bernal as Nibali wins Stage 20

A wonderful ride saw Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain Merida) win Stage 20 of the Tour de France, as Egan Bernal (Team INEOS) sealed the deal with a controlled ride to all but confirm overall victory.

Nibali attacked towards the end of the brutal Val Thorens (33.4km, 5.5%) climb, leaving his breakaway companions behind - and had the legs to hold off the chasing GC bunch and take the win.

The 22-year-old Bernal made history as he provisionally confirmed becoming the first ever Colombian winner of the Tour de France ahead of Sunday’s largely ceremonial final stage.

Alejandro Valverde and his Movistar Team colleague Mikel Landa finished the stage second and third respectively, with Bernal fourth - just 17 seconds behind Nibali.

Last year’s winner Geraint Thomas crossed the line with his Team INEOS teammate Bernal to confirm second place overall, whilst third place on the GC podium was clinched by Steven Kruijswijk (Team Jumbo-Visma).

Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck - Quick Step) slipped back to fifth overall as he lost time on the final climb.
