Michael Woods (EF Education First) once again proved to be in great shape in this final part of the season as he took the win in Milano-Torino after dropping his rivals on the steep percentages on the final climb.
A strong group of five riders got away early in the race and managed to build up an advantage of around six minutes before the peloton began to chase. In rainy weather conditions, the gap started to come down as the riders got closer to the Superga ascent, which they had to overcome twice.
Remi Cavagna (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) took off and went solo as soon as the breakaway reached the climb but with Tao Geoghegan Hart (Team INEOS) setting the pace in the peloton, Cavagna was caught again before he reached the top.
A few riders attacked on the following descent, but it all came back together as the peloton started on the Superga climb for the final time. Woods tried to get away several times but it wasn’t until he entered the final few hundred meters of the race that he finally succeeded. Alejandro Valverde (Movistar Team) and Adam Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) did their best to keep up with the strong Canadian but they had to settle for second and third place respectively.
Below are the Velon data outputs from the race:
Also the Tour de France winner @EganBernal shows good shape this late in the season as he hangs on for sixth place today.
