Richard Carapaz (Movistar Team) struck out solo on a short, intense and mountainous Giro d’Italia Stage 14 and took the Maglia Rosa with a stunning ride to Courmayeur.
Simon Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) chased him all the way and finished an impressive second, taking some time back in GC, while a fascinating tactical battle played out among all the big contenders.
The riders tackled five categorised climbs across the 131km stage and it was all-action racing from the gun, with a group of favourites moving clear on the first climb of the day, before an eight-man escape group formed.
The hugely impressive Carapaz, who also won Stage 4 in Frascati, soloed away from everybody on the Colle San Carlo to win by 1’32” from closest stage rival Yates, and set the overall race alight.
Carapaz now leads GC by just seven seconds from Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma), with Vincenzo Nibali (Team Bahrain Merida) third overall, 1’47” back on the leader.
