Ilnur Zakarin (Team Katusha Alpecin) triumphed on a gruelling Giro d’Italia Stage 13 as Jan Polanc (UAE Team Emirates) kept the Maglia Rosa.
Zakarin rode in the breakaway for nearly six hours on the 196km stage, going head-to-head with Mikel Nieve (Mitchelton-SCOTT) and eventually beating him by 35” at the summit finish of Ceresole Reale.
Mikel Landa (Movistar Team) came third after a superb effort from the Spaniard and his team, 1’20” down on Zakarin but 1’47” ahead of race favourite Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma), who marked Vincenzo Nibali (Team Bahrain Merida) on the final climb and crossed the line with his Italian rival.
Simon Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) lost time while Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro Team) suffered a mechanical late in the day on a dramatic, complex stage.
Polanc now leads GC by 2’25” from Roglic, with Zakarin third, 2’56” behind the Maglia Rosa, ahead of more mountain tests to come this weekend.
