It was Primož Roglič of Team Jumbo-Visma who set down an early marker at the Giro d’Italia as he won the Stage 1 ITT in Bologna.
The Slovenian star was the twelfth rider to go down the ramp, going on to secure the first maglia rosa with a time of 12’54”. Briton Simon Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) was the third last rider to tackle the 8km time trial and he finished in second place, 19 seconds down on Roglič.
Vincenzo Nibali (Bahrain-Merida) was third, 23 seconds off Roglič, with Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana Pro Team) and Tom Dumoulin (Team Sunweb) completing the top five, both 28 seconds down.
