Simon Yates clinched the overall win at Tirreno-Adriatico as Filippo Ganna romped to victory on the concluding time trial.
Yates - making his debut in the race - was the final rider down the start ramp on the 10.1km out-and-back course in San Benedetto del Tronto and clocked a time of 11 minutes and 42 seconds which was good enough for 18th place on the stage.
More importantly, that result meant that the Mitchelton-SCOTT rider sealed the blue jersey and distinctive gilded trident with a 17-second winning margin over British compatriot Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers), who ended the stage in fourth place.
And Thomas’s team-mate Ganna was also celebrating after he proved to be the fastest rider on the day. The Italian champion averaged a whopping 56.6km/h as he wrapped up an impressive stage triumph, 18 seconds ahead of Victor Campenaerts (NTT Pro Cycling), with Rohan Dennis (INEOS Grenadiers) eight seconds further back in third.
After the stage Yates said: “I tried to do my best and was nervous before it due to the race situation. I wanted to finish the job off for the team because they’d been fantastic all race and today it was down to me. I’m really happy I could pull it off.”
