Tour de France 2020: Pogacar doubles up

Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) won his second stage of this year's Tour de France, coming out on top in a dramatic day in the mountains on Stage 15.

An eight-man break had set off in pursuit of building up an advantage earlier in the day, and that stretched to over four minutes but never really looked like staying away despite some impressive efforts. Michael Gogl (NTT Pro Cycling) and Pierre Rolland (B&B Hotels - Vital Concept) were the last men standing before Rolland struck out alone, but the Frenchman was caught on the early part of the HC finish climb the Grand Colombier, a 17.4km slog averaging a gradient of 7.1% but frequently hitting more than 10%.

At the same moment as Rolland was reeled in, with 13km of the stage remaining, Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers) crucially lost contact with the group that had just absorbed Rolland, and Jumbo-Visma pushed the pace on the front as last year's Tour de France winner began to drop further back.

The group pushing on became ever more select, with Nairo Quintana (Arkea-Samsic) another GC casualty as he lost touch.

As the finale shaped up, Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) attacked with 500m to go. Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo), Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) and Pogacar reacted, with Porte pulling past Roglic.

Pogacar and Roglic then both overtook the Australian and it was Pogacar who won the sprint for the line, taking a 10-second bonus in the GC with the stage win.

Roglic heads into the rest day with a 40-second lead over his compatriot Pogacar in the GC, with Rigoberto Uran (EF Pro Cycling) 1min 34sec down on the leader in third. Bernal dropped outside the top 10 after finishing more than seven minutes down on Pogacar.
