Daniel Martinez took the spoils on the 13th stage of the Tour de France, but it was Primoz Roglic and Tadej Pogacar who were the biggest winners in the battle for the yellow jersey.
Martinez (EF Education First Pro Cycling) bridged over to Max Schachmann with Schachmann’s BORA-hansgrohe team-mate Lennard Kamna on his wheel on the final climb of the day, and once Schachmann had dropped back in the last kilometre, Martinez then proved the fastest finisher on the final drag to the line to seal his first Tour stage win.
By the time that had happened, further down the climb Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) and Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) had joined forces to distance their GC rivals and both were able to achieve significant time gains as a result.
At the end of the day, Roglic had seen his lead at the top of the overall standings grow to 44 seconds, with Pogacar moving up into second place. Egan Bernal (INEOS Grenadiers) rolled home 38 seconds behind the Slovenian duo, and now trails Roglic by 59 seconds, in third place overall.
