Simon Yates produced a sublime climbing display to win the fifth stage of Tirreno-Adriatico, and move into leader’s jersey with three days remaining.
Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) jumped from a vastly reduced peloton 5km from the summit of Sarnano-Sassotetto, and after shedding his rivals, he pressed home his advantage in devastating style, crossing the line with a 35-second winning margin.
Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers), Rafal Majka (BORA-hansgrohe) and Aleksandr Vlasov (Astana) were the only riders who were able to muster any form of reply, with Thomas pipping Majka to second place at the finish.
Those results meant Yates opened up a 16-second lead over Majka at the top of the overall standings, with Thomas 23 seconds further back in third.
After the stage Yates said: “I knew I had good legs and my team did a really good job to set me up. I’m happy to take the jersey and the win. I’m still building towards the Giro and the sensations are good so we’re definitely on track.”
