It was Primoz Roglic who proved the fastest finisher on the first summit finish of the Tour, outsprinting his rivals in the final metres to claim a perfectly timed stage victory.
Team Jumbo-Visma had set a brutal pace to deter any attacks on the ascent to Orcières-Merlette, and when Wout van Aert pulled off it was Roglic who stepped up to finish the job off.
The Slovenian hauled back an attack from Guillaume Martin (Team Cofidis) and then launched his sprint in the last 100 metres which sealed his sixth win of the season.
Compatriot Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) crossed the line in second position with home favourite Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) in third.
Those results mean Alaphilippe stays in the yellow jersey but Roglic has moved up to third in the general classification, seven seconds behind. Adam Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) stays second overall - four seconds back - after his 10th-placed finish.
Elsewhere, Peter Sagan (BORA – Hansgrohe) and Sam Bennett (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) are now tied for points in the battle for the green jersey, and Pogacar has moved into the white. Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R La Mondiale) meanwhile, will live to fight another day as King of the Mountains.
