Milano-Torino 2020: Dominant Demare sprints to victory

Arnaud Demare proved the fastest finisher in a star-studded field at Milano-Torino to wrap up his first victory of the season.

With its largely flat parcours, the 101st edition of this historic race had attracted some of the fastest sprinters in the world and it was Demare who took the plaudits after a pulsating finale.

Several teams had worked together to bring the breakaway back before the lead-out trains went toe-to-toe in the closing stages. All the while Demare had bided his time brilliantly and avoided a crash in the last 7km before unleashing his sprint.

The Frenchman latched on to Peter Sagan’s wheel as he kicked for home and managed to round the BORA – hansgrohe rider before holding off late responses from Caleb Ewan and Wout van Aert, who finished in second and third respectively.

Demare’s victory was particularly impressive given Velon’s live data showed Van Aert had produced 1320W of maximum power in the final sprint and reached a top speed of 71.5km/h.

Here’s a recap of some of the standout rider data recorded from the race:
