It’s been a long wait but, finally, the first Monument of the cycling season - Milano-Sanremo - will take place on Saturday.
The race usually takes place in March but has been switched to this spot on the calendar this year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Clocking in at a whopping 299km, it remains the longest one-day race of the season, but the route for 2020 has been significantly altered and could be more selective than ever before.
Gone are the traditional Passo del Turchino and Capi climbs close to the Ligurian coastline, with the route taking a more inland route across northern Italy instead, including a debut appearance of the Colle di Nava ascent, before the peloton skirts the seafront with 36km to go.
The Cipressa and Poggio then come thick and fast before the frontrunners drop into Sanremo for a flat-out finish along the Via Roma.
If those changes weren’t enough, team sizes have also been cut from seven to six riders this year, meaning it’ll be harder to assert control in the bunch.
All that means we’re in for a really exciting, unpredictable race, and you can get closer to the action than ever before by using our new-and-improved Race Centre.
This latest version is a must-have for all cycling fans as it allows you to follow top riders such as Peter Sagan, Julian Allaphilippe and Vincanzo Nibali like never before.
As well plotting their position in the race, you can see riders’ speed, power and cadence data, and our pioneering Red Zone technology will tell you who has (or hasn’t) been riding above a sustainable effort, so you’ll be able to work out who is likely to burn out and who could come on strong at the end of the race.
The Spotlight area enables you to select up to 10 riders and compare their live data side by side. So, if a handful of riders are on the attack, you’ll be able to see who’s on the limit and who has something in reserve.
Finally, we’ve introduced a new Moments section, which will bring you not just race updates, but also analytical snippets such as which rider has produced the highest power in the race so far and who has hit the highest speed.
The Race Centre is available free of charge and is fully optimised to whichever device you choose to view it on. And if English isn’t your first language, don’t worry, you can find it in other languages by clicking on these links:
