Julian Alaphilippe produced a storming display to win the second stage of the 2020 Tour de France, outsprinting Marc Hirschi and Adam Yates in the three-way battle for victory.
Alaphilippe (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) jumped from the peloton on the Col des Quatre Chemins and only Hirschi (Team Sunweb) and Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) were able to muster a reply.
The trio worked well together on the descent into Nice and it was Alaphilippe who proved the fastest finisher by narrowly edging out Hirschi to seal the fifth Tour win of his remarkable career.
That result meant Alaphilippe also earned himself a spell in the yellow jersey for a second year in a row, and he tops the overall standings with a four-second advantage over Yates.
Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) will swap the yellow jersey for green on stage three as he tops the points classification, with Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R La Mondiale) in the polka-dot jersey. Hirschi’s performance meanwhile, earns him the white young rider’s jersey.
