Diego Ulissi won his second stage of this year’s Giro d’Italia in a sprint finish with Maglia Rosa João Almeida and Patrick Konrad on Stage 13.
The UAE Team Emirates rider dropped one of the big favourites for the stage Peter Sagan on the final climb of the day, as splits on the Calaone climb caused excitement in the GC battle too.
Almeida’s Deceuninck - Quick-Step team had the Portuguese perfectly placed to carry him in the lead group on the descent and into the finish, where he was beaten to the line by Ulissi. Almeida picked up six bonus seconds with second place to extend his GC lead to 40 seconds, as Konrad placed third.
The day’s early break of seven riders was trimmed down to just two by the time the race hit the second of the two climbs inside the final 30km, and from there it was lit up on the Calaone. Sagan and another stage favourite Ben Swift found themselves 30 seconds off the lead group by the time they finished the descent, and the stage win was contested by the GC contenders.
The riders now face an individual time trial in tomorrow’s Stage 14, a tough 34.1km course with a Category 4 climb, the Muro di Ca’ del Poggio.
