Vuelta a España 2019: Angel Madrazo wins stage five as Miguel Angel Lopez takes lead

Breakaway rider Angel Madrazo (Burgos-BH) climbed to victory on stage five of the Vuelta a España as Miguel Angel Lopez regained the overall lead.

Madrazo formed part of a three-man breakaway alongside team-mate Jetse Bol and Jose Herrada (Cofidis, Solutions Credits) but attacked in the last 500m to win by 10 seconds at the summit finish at Observatorio Astrofísico de Javalambre. Bol was second and Herrada third.

Lopez (Astana Pro Team) attacked out of what was left of the peloton in the closing kilometres and finished fourth, 1min 30sec ahead of previous leader Nicolas Roche (Team Sunweb), who couldn’t stay with the lead group and was dropped.

Primoz Roglic (Team Jumbo-Visma) climbs to second overall, 14 seconds back, while Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) is 23 seconds adrift in third.
