The 2019 edition of Gent-Wevelgem turned out to be one of the hardest and most memorable ones in many years. A strong group of 20 riders, including several of the pre-race favorites, got away with over 200 km to go already.
A furious chase played out over the following 180 km before it ultimately all got back together. Numerous attacks occurred on the last few kilometers but at the end, it came down to the expected sprint.
Alexander Kristoff (UAE Team Emirates) was the first to launch his sprint and the strong Norwegian managed to keep his rivals behind him all the way towards the line. John Degenkolb (Trek-Segafredo) finished second with Oliver Naesen (Ag2r) in third place.
