New for 2021, Velon Fantasy allows cycling fans to create and manage their own team for all the major races on the calendar, competing in private and public leagues and being in with the chance of winning great prizes throughout the year.
So how does Velon Fantasy work?
Once registered, fans will be able to make their team selection for the next race on the calendar. You can sign up at any time during the season, and even once a stage race is under way you can still enter your team for that race (although you’ll have more ground to make up on your rivals in the season-long competition!).
Players can compete in any individual race as a one-off, and will also be automatically entered into the season-long competition. Fantastic prizes are on offer for each race, as well as for the overall season.
For every race, you must select 8 riders to form your Velon Fantasy team.
For stage races, you need to select two riders from each of the following categories: Road Code Leaders, Sprinters, Climbers and All Rounders. In each of the categories, except for All Rounders, the riders will be divided into two sub-categories: A and B. This system operates in place of a salary cap, and offers you a chance to show off your strategic nous by strategically selecting a balance of riders.
For one-day races, all riders will be classified as All Rounders, allowing you to go all-out in your quest for maximum impact and points scoring.
Trading and the game of strategy
Before the start of any race, you can perform as many changes as you want to your 8-rider team before the lock-out occurs.
For each one-day race, you make a fresh selection of 8 riders for your team. The lock-out happens when the race starts, and no further changes to your team can be made. Due to the nature of one-day races, no trades are available.
For stage races, you can perform as many changes as you want to your 8-rider team before the lock of the first stage. When the lock-out for stage one occurs, no changes to your “live” team can be made.
In stage races, players have two daily trades per stage they can make in their team, once the race has started.
Once a stage is active, you will already be able to make your two trades for the following stage, and will have until the lock-out for the following stage to finalise those trades.
Choose wisely and try and plan ahead to ensure you have a careful trade strategy that ensures you maximise your point-scoring chances for the various demands of each day’s racing!
How do I score points?
Points are awarded in line with the race results. In stage races points will be awarded daily to the top 40 finishing positions on the stage, with bonus points awarded to the top five scoring riders in the stage’s points (sprint) classification and the top five scoring riders in the stage’s KOM (climber) classification. A small bonus will also be awarded for the top five riders in each of the overall GC, overall points and overall KOM standings after each stage.
At the end of a stage race, the top 50 riders in the final GC standings will also be awarded points, as will the top five riders in both the final points and KOM classifications.
In races in which Velon has its live rider data system in operation, a daily Velon Power Bonus will also be awarded to the top five riders who register the highest average power across the entire stage. This bonus can only be awarded to riders who have carried a data device.
For one-day races, the riders finishing in the top 50 positions will be awarded points.
The scale of points awarded is at the bottom of this page, and can also be found in the Help > Scoring Rules section of the game.
Leagues: Ramp up the competitive element!
You can create a league at any point of the season, and choose whether you want that league to run for all the remaining races or for one race only.
Your league can be private, allowing you to select who you admit, or it can be public and open to anybody. The number of leagues you can join is unlimited!
The pro teams will also have official leagues, in which you can compete against other fans of your favourite teams, and you may even see some of the pros popping up in their team league rankings because these riders are competitive in every single aspect!
The Velon Fantasy league, which you will find at the top of the League landing page within the game, is the official ranking for the season-long competition into which all players are entered.
More information on Velon Fantasy is available in the Help section within game, where sub-sections on how to play, rules and FAQs cover more areas of how the game works.
Velon Fantasy is free to play and is available now! Make sure you’ve registered to play, and start picking your team now.
