Tirreno-Adriatico 2020: Woods edges out Majka on Stage 3

Michael Woods produced a canny performance to edge out Rafal Majka on the third stage of Tirreno-Adriatico.

Woods (EF Education First Pro Cycling) had jumped clear on the final climb of the day, only for Majka (BORA – hansgrohe) to bridge over to him from a select group on the descent which followed.

The duo worked together well as they made their way into Saturnia, but Woods caught Majka unaware by launching his sprint early and managed to open up a gap as he surged towards the line, taking his victory by a one-second margin.

It was Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb) who took third place on the stage, outsprinting from an elite group of pre-race favourites 20 seconds behind.

Bonus seconds accrued at the finish mean Woods has a five-second lead at the top of the General Classification, with Kelderman 21 seconds further adrift in third.

After the stage Woods said: “I looked at this stage before coming here and recognized it could be a good one for me. The guys on the team rode amazing and did some great work for me, and I had no choice but to step up my game.

“The next two days are very challenging so the GC battle is far from over, but we’ve got a very strong team here.”
