Pascal Ackermann made it two wins from two at Tirreno-Adriatico with another perfectly timed sprint on the second day of action.
The BORA-hansgrohe rider latched onto Davide Ballerini’s wheel as the action reached a frenetic conclusion and managed to round the Deceuninck – Quick-Step rider on his way to the line before holding off late surges from Fernando Gaviria (UAE Team Emirates), Rick Zabel (Israel Start-Up Nation) and Tim Merlier (Alpecin – Fenix).
Ackermann wrapped up his victory by half a wheel length, with Gaviria in second place and Zabel third. That result also meant the German doubled his lead in the General Classification to eight seconds courtesy of bonuses at the line.
After the stage Ackermann said: “It was a different sprint today and another long one for me. I originally went too early so had to move myself back into position, but in the end my sprint was the perfect distance from the finish line.
“I’ll take a rest tomorrow now because it’s a really hard stage, but I’m looking forward to Saturday when we get to sprint again.”
