Tirreno-Adriatico 2020: Lucas Hamilton wins Stage 4

Lucas Hamilton (Mitchelton-SCOTT) secured the biggest win of his career to date with victory on Stage 4 of Tirreno-Adriatico.

The Australian clipped off the front with Fausto Masnada (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) on the descent of the Ospedaletto, the final climb of the day, and after the pair had opened up a 15-second advantage over a group that included race leader Mike Woods (EF Education First Pro Cycling), they went head to head on the run-in to Cascia.

With a rise into the finish, Hamilton sat on Masnada’s wheel and attacked with around 300m to go, powering past the Italian with a stinging effort that saw him average 710 watts over 26 seconds to leave his rival for the stage win in his wake.

Masnada moved up to third in the GC, at 18 seconds off race leader Woods, while Rafal Majka (BORA - hansgrohe) lost a few seconds in the overall but retained second place, and he is now nine seconds behind Woods.

Woods led a group of GC contenders that included Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers), Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb), Alexandr Vlasov (Astana), Majka and Simon Yates (Mitchelton-SCOTT) across the line 10 seconds behind Hamilton, who leapt up to fourth in the GC with his victory.
