Jakob Fuglsang produced an imperious ride to add Il Lombardia to his impressive palmares after attacking solo on the final climb of the day.
The Astana Pro Team rider – who also triumphed at Liege-Bastogne-Liege last season – distanced Team Jumbo-Visma’s George Bennett with a stinging move on the San Fermo della Battaglia ascent and then pressed home his advantage to take the spoils in Como with a 31-second winning margin.
Bennett – who had earlier found himself outnumbered in a six-man elite group containing two Astana and three Trek-Segafredo riders – took a hard-fought second place on the podium, with Fuglsang’s team-mate Aleksandr Vlasov 20 seconds further adrift in third.
Earlier on, pre-race favourite Remco Evenepoel (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) crashed on the descent of the Muro di Sormano and was taken to hospital.
