Giro d'Italia 2020: Hat-trick victory for Demare

Arnaud Demare wrapped up the third of his Giro d’Italia stage wins by proving the dominant sprinter once again on Stage 7.

The Groupama FDJ rider was given a textbook lead out by his team-mates and then repaid those efforts by surging clear of his rivals down the closing straight.

Only Peter Sagan (BORA-hansgrohe) could muster any form of reply in the finale, but he never looked like troubling Demare, who comfortably wrapped up his victory in Brindisi.

It was Michael Matthews (Team Sunweb) who took the remaining top-three spot, with British champion Ben Swift (INEOS Grenadiers) in fourth.

Joao Almeida (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) was also in a sizeable group credited with the same time as Demare, meaning he retained his 43-second lead over Pello Bilbao (Bahrain McLaren) at the top of the overall standings.

As there were no King of the Mountains points on offer on a pan-flat stage, Filippo Ganna (INEOS Grenadiers) lived to fight another day in the King of the Mountains jersey, while Demare extended his lead at the top of the points classification.

The action was ravaged by crosswinds, with countless riders dropping back on the 143km trek from  Matera, but everything came back together in time for the finish.

Here’s a recap of some of the standout rider data recorded from the race:
