Filippo Ganna produced one of the most impressive rides in recent memory to solo away from the breakaway on Stage 5 of the Giro d’Italia, and take his second win of this year’s race.
The INEOS Grenadiers rider, who triumphed on the opening day time trial and wore the Maglia Rosa on Stage 2, dropped Thomas de Gendt and Einer Rubio on the final climb of the day, the Valico di Montescuro, to solo away to victory having ridden in the breakaway all day.
It was a long stage at 225km, starting in Mileto and finishing up in Camigliatello Silano, and after a hard opening 40km an eight-man break finally established itself, containing Ganna and his team-mate Salvatore Puccio.
As the group was whittled down, it was the trio of Ganna, De Gendt and Rubio who sized one another up on the slopes of the Montescuro, before Ganna took off to win by a margin of 34 seconds.
João Almeida (Deceuninck - Quick-Step) extended his overall lead in the GC to 43 seconds, ahead of Pello Bilbao (Bahrain-McLaren) and Wilco Kelderman (Team Sunweb).
